Introduction

The study of history was established up in 1942 at Guizhou University. It is one of the disciplines with the longest history after the founding of 'National University of Guizhou'. In May 2016, in accordance with the university's discipline adjustment arrangements, the History Department, the Ethnology/Anthropology Center (originally part of the former College of Humanities), and the original Chinese Cultural Academy (Yangming Cultural Research Institute) were merged to form the “College of History and Ethnic Culture (Chinese Cultural Academy, Yangming Cultural Institute).

In its long history of education, some well-known scholars with significant influence in the field of Chinese history, such as Yao Gongshu, Zhang Zhenpei, Hou Shaozhuang and Du Wenduo has taught in the College. Among them, Yao Gongshu and historians Tan Qichen and Shi Nianhai are renowned as the pioneers of Chinese Historical Geography. Zhang Zhenpei's “Notes of Shi Tong (Historical Perspectives)” is a classic book of “Shi Tong” studies. 'The General History of Guizhou', edited by Du Wenxuan and Hou Shaozhuang, is a model for the study of regional history in the country. Over the years, the College has produced more than 5,000 history graduates. Among them, there are many well-known alumni, including Shen Yiqing (the current Deputy Secretary of the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee, the Provincial Governor, and the Secretary of the Leading Party Group of the provincial government) and Chen Zuwu (member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the former Director of the Institute of History under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences).

The College boasts a strong professional teaching staff. Among the 42 full-time teachers (14 professors, 16 associate professors, and 11 lecturers), 76% hold doctorate degrees and 71% hold senior professional titles. It also includes experts who have studied or taught in overseas universities, as well as local scholars who have been engaged in historical studies, Chinese studies, and ethnological studies for many years, achieving outstanding results. In recent years, many doctors of History, Ethnology, and Philosophy from prestigious universities have also joined the College.

The College has made great achievements in scientific research. It has successfully gained some national level projects, such as four major bidding projects of National Social Science Fund, one special project entrusted by the National Social Science Fund, and several projects of National Social Science Fund Projects. The College's study of Sinology, local culture, history, and ethnology has exerted significant academic influence among Chinese universities. The College also hosts The Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base of Guizhou Universities--The Chinese Traditional Culture and Guizhou Regional Culture Research Center, which has been awarded “Humanities and Social Sciences Demonstration Base” and “Excellent Campus Culture and Educating Base” in Guizhou Province.

In 2004, two master's degree programs in the discipline of History were authorized: “Master of Ancient Chinese History” and “Master of Specialized History”. In 2011, the “Master of Science in Chinese History” program was approved. In 2014, History was identified as one of the key disciplines of Guizhou University. Due to its long tradition in the study of Chinese history and traditional culture, local history and culture in Southwest China and Guizhou, the History discipline has made great academic accomplishments.

In the field of history and local culture research, the teachers in the College have devoted themselves to collating and researching 'Qingshuijing Documents'. The College has established the “Qingshuijing Research Center” and gained the first major projects of National Social Sciences Fund in Guizhou. The College has published many volumes of the large-scale archive, 'Tianzhu Documents' (1-22 volumes); it has also successively published papers and for monographs of 'Qingshuijiang Research Series'. 'Qingshuijiang Study' has become a unique historical and cultural research field after the study of “Oracle”, “Dunhuang Documents”, and “Huizhou Documents”. Having become a focus in the study of domestic history and interdisciplinary study, it continues to have a significant impact on the academic community in China.

In the field of traditional culture, the College has played a leading role in Yangming Study, Post-Yangming Study, and Yangming Cultural Research. It has become one of the three major research centers of Yangming study. The College has edited and published a series of academic publications, such as “Yangming Academic Journal” (1-8 series) and “The Humanities World” (1-7 series). It has produced more than 30 monographs on Sinology, history, and culture, as well as 300 papers. The College has been granted more than 20 National Social Science Research projects. The research on the relationship between religion and social changes in the ethnic regions has yielded remarkable results. A new academic discipline is being set up based on the college’s research on the historical influence of Chinese Buddhism, ethnic minority religions, and Western Catholicism and Christianity in ethnic regions. Since 2010, the College has published 15 monographs of “Guizhou's National History and Culture Book Series”. It has developed a discipline cluster combining ethnic history, cultural history, as well as social and religious research. Since 2016, teachers of the College have won a total of seven National Social Science Fund projects.

In the field of ethnology, the College established a second-level discipline Master's degree program in Ethology in 2006. In 2010, Ethology became a provincial key discipline and a discipline with Guizhou features. In the same year, it was approved as a first-level discipline master's degree program and became the only provincial-level key discipline of Liberal Arts in Guizhou University. Currently, there are four masters' degree programs (second-level discipline): Marxist Ethnic Theory and Policy, Ethnology, Chinese Ethnic Economy, and Chinese Ethnic History; and one doctorate degree program (second-level discipline) in Ecological Ethnology. With distinct features, the innovation capability of the Ethnic Ethnology researchers of the College has entered the top ranks in China. In the past 3 years, the College has published more than 20 monographs and over 100 high-level academic papers with and has undertaken over 50 scientific research projects at national, ministerial, and provincial levels. The College has made breakthroughs in the two major Social Science Fund bidding projects: “Collection, Collation and Research of the Ancient Classics of Chinese Miao” and “General History of the Hmong Study”, and in the two other key projects of the National Social Science Fund: “National Identity Research of China's Nationalities” and “Collection, Collation and Research of the English and French Hmong Documents”. All the research displays distinctive ethnic and regional characteristics and is playing a leading role in Hmong study at home and abroad. The study of the 'Ancient Miaojiang Corridor' in ethnic history is highly valued by the National Civil Affairs Commission and has received great response. In 2017, the College was approved to set up State Ethnic Affairs Commission’s National Policy and Theory Research Base--Research Center for Southwestern Ethnic Cultural Corridors.
