Introduction


The College of Economics was established in 2004. Its predecessor was the Department of Agricultural Economics of the National Guizhou Institute of Agriculture and Technology founded in 1941. As such, it has a history of more than 80 years. The College is an important teaching and scientific research base whose goal is to cultivate high-level specialized talents for the economic development of Guizhou province.

The College has two provincial-level research centers (Marxist Economics Development and Application Research Center and Collaborative Innovation Center for Modern and Efficient Agricultural Development in Guizhou Province), and three university-level research centers (Regional Economic Development Research Center, Economic Reform and Development Research Center, and Economics and Strategic Research Center for National Defense). It also has a Center for Finance Master Education and an advanced training center providing Education Training, Continuing Education, and Official Training.

The College has a complete discipline system. It has a doctorate program of Econometrics (second-level discipline), a master’s program of Applied Science (first-level discipline), a Master of Finance program (professional degree) and eight master’s programs (second-level discipline) in National Economics, Regional Economics, Public Finance, Industrial Economics, International Trade, Labor Economics, Quantitative Economics and Finance. The College also offers four bachelor’s programs in Economics, Finance, International Economics, and Trade.

The College has a faculty of 74. Of them, there are 63 full-time teachers, including 14 professors and 31 associate professors. Due to their remarkable achievements, some professors have earned the honor to be experts in famous associations, organizations, and think tanks at both the ministerial and provincial levels. Over 30% of the teachers have studied or worked abroad. The College has invited Li Jingwen, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as the honorary dean of the college. It has also invited famous scholars abroad and at home to be honorary professors or part-time professors, including Joseph Eugene Stiglitz (Nobel Prize winner in economics), economist Li Wuwei, Cheng Guoqiang (winner of National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation) and Long Yongtu (former vice minister of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation).

The College has a strong academic research atmosphere and has made outstanding achievements in scientific research. In the past five years. It has obtained more than 20 national-level projects funded by the National Natural Science Fund, the National Social Science Fund, and the Ministry of Science and Technology, more than 20 provincial-level projects funded by the Social Science Fund of Guizhou Province and the Governor Fund as well as over 100 projects sponsored by enterprises. This has created an average annual research funding of 3 million yuan. It has more than 100 academic papers and six monographs published annually.

The College is active in foreign exchanges. Every year, there are more than 20 teachers attending academic conferences or seminars at home and abroad. Over 20 famous domestic and overseas experts and scholars are invited to give academic reports. The College has also organized and hosted many international and domestic academic conferences. The College has established cooperation programs with Sweden's Gavle University, the United States Semel University, Taiwan Kaohsiung University, Wuhan University, Hunan University, and Central South University.

The College attaches great importance to the cultivation of a comprehensive education for students, including scientific and humanistic awareness and thinking, communicating, writing, and computer operating.  The College currently has an enrollment of over 1,000 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students, with more than 30 foreign students enrolled. Every year, more than 30 graduate students and undergraduates are sent as exchange students to famous universities both at home and abroad for study.

The College has two main goals. The first is to strengthen the development of the teaching staff, scientific research team, and management team. The second is to conscientiously perform the four major functions of cultivating talents: scientific research, social service, cultural heritage, and innovation. The College strives to develop into a college with a leading research level with its own distinct features in the Western region of China. It also aims to be an important base for economic research, policy consulting, and cultivating high-level economic talents for China and the world at large.
