Introduction

The Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of the Guizhou Institute of Technology were founded in 1958. It was renamed the College of Electrical Engineering of Guizhou University of Technology on October 20, 2000. Since August 2004 it has been known as the College of Electrical Engineering of Guizhou University. With more than 50 years of proven experience, the College has now become an important base for cultivating scientific talents. It holds an indispensable position in scientific research in the area of electrical energy and control, especially in Guizhou Province.

The College currently has 74 faculty members and 68 full-time teachers. Among these there are 15 professors and 22 associate professors, 20 teachers who hold doctor's degrees, 39 who hold master's degrees, and four doctoral candidates. Of its outstanding faculty, two experts are receiving special allowances from the State Council. There is one provincial expert, one school-level academic leader, two doctoral supervisors, 34 master supervisors, three school-level academic core teachers, and three outstanding young talented professionals of Guizhou Province. Not only have they made outstanding achievements in the field of energy and control-related frontiers, they have also persisted in cultivating innovative, talented young professionals for the future benefit of the country. Since 1958, nearly 10,000 students have graduated from the College who are now working in various technological fields and sectors of the nation. The College has four departments, a section for electrical foundation teaching, and a laboratory center. Each of the four departments runs an undergraduate program respectively, namely, electrical engineering and automation, automation, measurement and control technology and instrumentation, and energy and power engineering. The College has one second-level discipline doctoral program, five first-level disciplines master's programs and five second-level discipline master's programs.

The laboratories at the college are: electrical engineering and automation lab, measurement technology and instrumentation lab, energy and power engineering lab, automation lab, the key lab of Power System Intelligent Technology of Guizhou, and the “Research Center of New Wire and Cable Engineering Technology of Guiyang” (co-built with Guiyang Xinxin Cable Factory), the New Energy Technology R&D Center (co-built with Xinxingjihua and Honghua company), and the Guizhou Boxue Testing Technology Co., Ltd. (co-built with Guizhou Guise Testing Technology Co., Ltd.). The laboratories occupy a total area of 4307.84 m2, and the estimated value of the equipment exceeds 40 million yuan.

With an illustrious tradition of outstanding teachers and an excellent academic atmosphere, the College of Electrical Engineering aims to become a prime site for people who have a deep affinity for energy and control sciences.

Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation offers the undergraduate program in electrical engineering and automation. It aims to cultivate the technical and management talented professionals for the automatic control of the whole process of power generation, transmission, distribution, protection, regulation, and the design and debugging of its electrical parts. Graduates can engage in the design, debugging and management of main power systems and automation control systems for factories, civil, and high-rise buildings.

Graduates are able to apply their electrical engineering expertise and engineering skills to discover, study, and solve complex practical electrical engineering. They are able to work in the design, development, application, and integration of electrical equipment and electrical systems. With profound social science knowledge and business management capabilities, they are qualified to be team leaders with effective communication and coordination skills. With good humanistic qualities, professional ethics and international perspectives, they are aware of their social responsibilities for sustainable development while vigorously serving the country and society.

Department of Automation
Automation technology has a very close relationship with control theory, information theory, system engineering, computer technology, electronics, and mathematics. The automation discipline formed on the basis of automation technology is a comprehensive discipline that integrates control science, system science, information science and computer science. It plays an important role in promoting national industrial modernization. The main courses include circuit theory, electronic technology, signal and system, automatic control theory, power electronics, motor and drag basics, process control, motion control, computer control technology, electrical control and PLC. Graduates are equipped with innovative capabilities in automation and related fields. With solid professional knowledge and skills, they can use automation expertise and engineering skills to discover and solve practical problems. Graduates of the Department of Automation are widely involved in scientific research, teaching, system design, new product development, hardware and software development in automation and related fields, as well as financial, corporate, and national administrative departments.

Department of Measurement and Control Technology and Instrumentation
The department mainly studies the theory and application technology of information detection, transmission, processing and utilization in information acquisition technology. The department offers "Measurement Technology and Instrumentation" as a major. The study includes computer measurement and control technology, wireless sensing and soft measurement technology, tactile sensing technology, visual inspection technology, new energy and sustainable energy, machine learning, and pattern recognition. The main courses include sensor technology, principles and design of measurement and control systems, detection technology, and virtual instrument technology. Graduates can go on to study computer measurement and control technology, embedded technology, modern sensor technology, or artificial intelligence. They are equipped to enter government agencies, research institutes and companies for any teaching, scientific research or management work on automated measurement technology, sensor and inspection technology, and production process control.

Department of Energy and Power Engineering
The study of this department focuses on the efficient conversion and utilization of clean energy, especially thermal energy, and the relevant devices. With the adjustment of China's energy structure and policies, the focus of the department has expanded from the thermal energy and power engineering of traditional power plants to the power generation and thermal energy utilization of renewable energy. Main courses for this major include engineering thermodynamics, engineering fluid mechanics, heat transfer, pumps and fans, boiler principles, turbine principles, thermal power plants, thermal process automation, environmental technology, renewable energy, and other required and elective courses. Graduates can enroll in master’s programs in thermal energy engineering, engineering thermal physics, or new energy. They can also work for power design institutes, power plants, power equipment design and manufacturing companies, and other enterprises and government agencies involved in energy engineering and environmental protection.

Section of Electrical Foundation
This section is responsible for the theory and part of the experimental teaching for the electric and electronic basic courses for all students in Guizhou University.  It offers the following undergraduate courses: circuit theory, electromagnetic fields, analog electronic technology, digital electronic technology, electrotechnics, common circuit simulation software application basics, circuit components and applications, electronic circuit simulation and analysis, integrated electronic circuit design, experimental design basis, analog electronic technology design, digital electronic technology design. Under the guidance of the three-fold concept of "solid foundation, all-around ability, and abundant practice,” the department works to build a new curriculum that integrates theories with practices for basic engineering courses. A four-layer curriculum was designed with electrical foundation, electronic technology, circuit simulation, and design and application as the main subjects.

Laboratory Center of Electrical Foundation
Basic electrical experimentation lays the foundation for scientific and creative talents. The center consists of 10 laboratories: circuit principle laboratory, electronic technology laboratory, microcomputer principle laboratory, electric machine laboratory, electrical and electronic simulation laboratory, electrical engineering laboratory, electronic design comprehensive laboratory, modern electronic design laboratory, and the comprehensive open laboratory. The labs are open to all engineering students of Guizhou University. They are bright, spacious, and safe, with a user-friendly design. The labs have internet network interfaces and could be further developed into intelligent labs. It is a "basic - new technology - comprehensive innovation" experimental platform.
