Introduction


Founded in 1956, the College of Zoology of Guizhou University grew out of the Department of Animal Husbandry of the former Guizhou Agricultural College. In 1958, it was renamed the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of Guizhou Agricultural College, and in 1992, Zoology Department of Guizhou Agricultural College. In 1997 when Guizhou University, Guizhou Agricultural College and other institutions merged to form a new Guizhou University, it was renamed Department of Animal Science, College of Biotechnology. In 2002, the College of Zoology of Guizhou University came into being.

The College has four first-level disciplines, that is, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, Aquatic Science and Scholastics. The College consists of four departments, i.e., Animal Science, Animal Medicine, Aquatic Science and Pratacultural Science. It has 852 full-time undergraduate students, 232 full-time postgraduate students, and 112 part-time postgraduate students. It has the faculty and staff of 95, including 70 full-time teachers, among whom 26 are professors, 28 associate professors, and five senior experimentalists. Of the faculty and staff, 51 hold doctoral degrees, and 26 hold master’s degrees.

In the College, there are three experts receiving special allowances from the State Council, one expert receiving special allowances from Guizhou Provincial Government, two members of the Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, two members of the Animal Epidemic Prevention Expert Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, one expert recruited as the New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education, ten provincial experts of distinctive titles, four academic leaders and seven academic backbones at university-level, two provincial outstanding doctoral supervisors, and one provincial distinguished science-technology researcher.

The College currently has one key discipline in Three Phases of the “211 Project” (Plateau Mountain and Animal Husbandry), one provincial distinctive key discipline (Animal Husbandry), and one distinctive undergraduate major of Guizhou Province (Aquaculture). The College offers three master’s programs in the first-level disciplines (Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Science, and Agrostology), seven master’s programs in the second-level disciplines (Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction, Animal Nutrition and Feedstuff, Special Economic Animal Breeding, Aquaculture, Basic Veterinary Science, Preventive Veterinary Science, Clinical Veterinary Science) and two professional master's programs (Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture). There are lots of key labs and centers at the state and provincial levels, including  Key Laboratory of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction of Plateau Mountains, funded by Ministry of Education, the provincial key labs of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction, and of Animal Epidemic and Veterinary Public Health, Guizhou Provincial Plateau Animal Breeding Engineering Laboratory, Guizhou Experimental Animal Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, Guizhou Engineering Research Institute of Pig Health Culture, the Provincial Research Center of Domestic Animal Embryo Transfer, and Guizhou Provincial Experimental Animal Management Services. The College has one ministerial-level innovative research team (focusing on the exploration, preservation and utilization of highland livestock and poultry germplasm resources), one provincial-level innovative talents team (focusing on animal genetics and breeding and biotechnology innovation, animal disease prevention and control and veterinary public health security), and one department-level innovative team (focusing on animal husbandry). Besides, there is one provincial-level “2011” Collaborative Innovative Center for Highland Livestock and Poultry Germplasm Resource Development, 1 Provincial Talent Base of Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction, and one Provincial Academician Workstation of Animal Husbandry in Plateau Mountain.

In the past five years, the College has undertaken 191 research projects, including those funded by National Major Programs for Science and Technology Development, and the National Natural Science Foundation, and other provincial and ministerial-level projects. The average annual research funding is nearly ten million yuan. The College has won one first prize, six second prizes and 19 third prizes for science and technology progress at the provincial level.  More than 60 invention patents and utility model patents have been approved; 19 academic monographs and textbooks, and over 1,500 academic papers have been published, among which, more than 200 have been collected by SCI, EI and ISTP.

The College attaches importance to the construction of research institutes, and has established a number of institutes such as Institute of Mini-pigs, Institute of Animal Nutrition and Feedstuff, Institute of Specialty Fishery, Institute of Poultry, and Institute of Animal Epidemic. In order to improve the students' hands-on abilities in experiment, practice and innovation, a college-level experimental practice teaching center has been established, with a pig farm, a chicken farm, a cattle farm, and an aquaculture farm, and the upgraded animal hospital. The area of specialized laboratories has reached 5,200 square meters, and the total value of various teaching and research instruments and equipment has been over 35.4 million yuan.

The College takes advantage of its own disciplines to fully serve the local economic and social development in Guizhou. It has signed cooperation agreements with more than 20 counties (cities), and with over 30 enterprises such as Da Bei Nong Group, Qingjiu Group and Nubia Technology Co., Ltd. Besides, it has participated in the implementation of Guizhou's action plans such as “Developing the villages by recruiting officials with doctor degrees in science and technology”, “Talent plan for supporting the remote, poverty-stricken areas and old revolutionary bases,” “Professors and doctors entering enterprise,” and “System project of hundred, thousand, ten-thousand specialists to promote specialty agriculture”. In such a way, it has deepened its cooperation with the local area and enterprises. The College has also motivated its faculty members and students to help with poverty reduction and with local economic and social development.

The College has established friendly and cooperative relations with relevant institutions in the United States, Canada, France, Thailand, New Zealand, Denmark, Laos, Gambia and other countries, and has conducted frequent academic exchanges to accelerate the internationalization of the college.

Oriented to the future, the College adheres to cultivating talents both in ability and morality in order to serve the local area, striving to build itself into a professional college with regional characteristics, and to contribute to the building of a well-off Guizhou.
