Introduction

The history of Tobacco Science at Guizhou University can be traced back to the early 1940s, when the National Institute of Agriculture and Technology in Guizhou Province began to conduct tobacco research and teaching work. With the joint efforts of the tobacco people of the older generation such as Hong Qikun, Bao Xianglin, Xiao Jizhong, Jiang Xiyu, Huang Lidong, and Zhou Minlan, the discipline of tobacco was able to develop gradually. In 1984, entrusted by the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau, it set up tobacco special courses for students from Yunnan Province, Guizhou Province, Sichuan Province, Hubei Province, and Shandong Province, and enrolled tobacco postgraduate students. In 1989, it was approved by the Ministry of Education to recruit tobacco undergraduate students. So far, more than 20,000 high-quality professional tobacco talents have been trained for Guizhou and the national tobacco industry.

In December 2014, under the strong support of the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau and Guizhou Tobacco Monopoly Bureau (Corporation), Guizhou University established the College of Tobacco Science based on the discipline of tobacco science of the former Agricultural College so as to serve the local economy better. The College currently has two departments of tobacco science and tobacco engineering, offering one undergraduate program and one master’s program, one undergraduate teaching experiment center, one provincial key laboratory, and one school-level research center. The tobacco traits genetic improvement and production application is one of the three research directions of the provincial key discipline -- "Crop Science". The College has 30 faculty members, including 23 full-time teachers. Among them, there are six professors, eight associate professors and nine lecturers; 16 teachers  hold Ph.D. degree and five hold master’s degree; one provincial innovative team, one teacher recruited as New Century Excellent Talent of the Ministry of Education; one provincial expert of Guizhou Province; one expert receiving the provincial government's special allowance, two province-level innovative talents, one outstanding provincial young technical talent, and two academic leading talent of Guizhou University.

The College is positioning itself according to the development orientation of “Basing on Guizhou, Facing the country, Running school cooperatively, and Serving the Industry”, cultivating high-quality specialized talents to meet the needs of the tobacco industry, supporting the tobacco industry to serve the national and regional economic and social development, and striving to build the national tobacco education base that features in “production, learning, and research”.
