The predecessor of the current College of Civil Engineering at Guizhou University was known as the Department of Civil Engineering at the Guizhou Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1958. Currently, it has eight departments: Civil Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, Building Environment and Energy Engineering, Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, and Civil Engineering Test Center. At present, there are 109 full-time faculty members, including one academician from both the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering of China, two provincial experts, nine professors, 30 associate professors, and among whom, 25 hold doctoral degrees. There are 2,162 students enrolled in the College, including 1,862 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates.

The College has two national first-level disciplines:

Civil Engineering

Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering

The College offers eight national second-level disciplines:

Structural Engineering

Municipal Engineering

Bridge and Tunnel Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering

Urban Underground Space

Building Environment and Energy Engineering

Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering

The College offers six national second-level master's programs:

Structural Engineering

Municipal Engineering

Bridge and Tunnel Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering

Urban Underground Space

Building Environment and Energy Engineering

In 2018, the College was authorized to confer national first-level doctoral degrees in civil engineering, including three national second-level doctoral programs:

Structural Engineering

Bridge and Tunnel Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering

The experimental center of the College has nine laboratories in the following areas: hydraulics, mechanics, structural engineering, water supply and drainage, building materials, hydraulics, building environment, civil engineering, and road-bridge engineering. The center's total area is approximately 18,000 m², including the Civil Engineering Hall (with an area over 7,700 m²). The College also boasts one key laboratory at provincial level in structural engineering. The area for administrative services covers over 1,000 m², with specialized classrooms covering more than 3,000 m². The College has been active in promoting interdisciplinary research across the board and integrating engineering with management. It has thus formed four integrated innovative platforms in the following areas: energy and environmental applications, green and assembly building technology, civil engineering and management, and civil engineering information center, highlighting the role of big data in the discipline of civil engineering.

Setting its sights on the frontiers of global science and technology as well as technology central to regional business development, the College has undertaken and completed a number of national natural science and technology projects, producing significant advanced research outcomes. These efforts help enhance faculty's capacities across the board and also boost industrial growth. From 2008 to 2018, the College received four Provincial Science and Technology Awards and 26 national invention patents. Faculty members and students published more than 1,500 papers in academic journals or at academic conferences at home and abroad, including eight papers in SCI.

The College offers eight undergraduate programs:

Civil Engineering

Road Engineering

Foundation and Geotechnical Engineering

Bridge and Tunnel Engineering

Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering

Water Supply and Drainage Engineering

Building Environment and Energy Engineering

Urban Underground Space Engineering

Annually, more than 460 students are enrolled in these programs. With the mission of fostering engineering talents with comprehensive competency, the College has given priority to building a major teaching platform featuring civil engineering, aiming to enhance professional learning by laying a solid ground for general knowledge. Furthermore, it has worked hard to help students put theory into practice by providing comprehensive experimental courses, extracurricular scientific and technological activities, special training, and internship opportunities. With these training, students are expected to gain solid professional knowledge, problem-solving capacity, and innovative awareness.

In line with the core objectives for cultivating talents highlighting high quality, diversity, creativity, and application, the College has been committed to fostering civil engineering postgraduates who have excellent competence in research, management, innovation, and application. Each department of the College has a team of 35 graduate supervisors. Additionally, over 60 doctoral and master's students are enrolled in the College each year. Making great strides in improving its resource management skills and asset allocation capabilities, the College has never ceased to upgrade its teaching conditions and improve the management of the master's program. Furthermore, it has made great efforts in restructuring discipline development system, discipline groups, and teaching laboratories. The College has put in place a unique process for graduate students of different programs or at different stages: Help them in a specific fashion and provide them with guidance in specific areas such as basic research, cross-field research, and major engineering projects.

Thanks to these efforts, the departments of the College have been able to cultivate a great number of talented professionals with excellent proficiency and global competence. Since the founding of New China, the College has seen countless graduates, including over 12,000 undergraduate students, over 900 graduate students, and more than 10 doctoral students. Most of the graduates have become prominent figures in their job positions, making a difference across all walks of life in China. Additionally, students' post-graduation employment rate has reached 100% for 16 consecutive years.

In collaboration with international academic and engineering societies, the College has also established cooperative relationships with internationally renowned universities such as Illinois Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. More than 20 undergraduate and graduate students go abroad each year, studying for short-term, half-year, or two-year exchange programs, and getting a joint double degree training. Currently, the College has partnerships in place with world-renowned corporations such as Country Garden, Evergrande, Vanke and CRCG, aligning it with the latest developments in global industry.
