The Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing Technology under the Ministry of Education was approved by the Ministry of Education and established in August 2007. The Laboratory has forged ahead in an orderly way by drawing on its connection with four first-level disciplines such as Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Software Engineering and Design, while taking advantage of the strengths and resources not only from the Laboratory itself, but also the Guizhou Manufacturing Informatization Productivity Promotion Center, Guizhou CAD Application Engineering Technology Center, CAD/CIMS Engineering Technology Research Center of Guizhou Province, and the Internet of Things Laboratory of Guizhou University. In July 2011, it successfully passed verification conducted by the Ministry of Education.

The Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing Technology of the Ministry of Education is a scientific research institution directly subordinated to Guizhou University. It prides itself on its well-structured faculty members. Some of the researchers from the Laboratory are exceedingly influential and known for their achievements in academic research both at home and abroad, making an impact across a number of special priority areas such as advanced manufacturing models and manufacturing information system, anti-fatigue design and manufacturing, surface engineering technology, and special equipment research and development. At present, the Laboratory has 54 faculty members for the key programs of study, including 23 professors and 49 Ph.D. holders. The faculty members, composed of leading researchers with excellent academic proficiency, are making a difference across related areas both nationally and internationally. The Laboratory boasts a great number of talented faculty: one is recognized as the National Young and Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions, five are noted as Experts Receiving Special Allowances From the State Council, three are awarded New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, six are named as Provincial Experts, four were awarded as Provincial Outstanding Teachers, and eight are recognized as Provincial Cross-Century Talents (Provincial Outstanding Scientific and Technological Talents).

The Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing Technology of the Ministry of Education provides the following programs:

A Post-Doctoral workstation in Mechanical Engineering

A Doctoral program with first-level discipline in Mechanical Engineering

A Master's program with first-level discipline in Mechanical Engineering

A Master's program with first-level discipline in Design Science

In the past five years, there were altogether 663 graduate students (full-time 569, part-time 94), 34 doctoral students, and 505 graduate students (full-time 445, part-time 60) enrolled in the program of mechanical engineering and design. 505 students were granted master's degrees (full-time 445, part-time 60), and 31 doctoral candidates were awarded doctoral degrees. The Laboratory has also taken charge of four major 'National Quality Engineering' projects: the National Innovative Talent Training Experimental Zone, National Excellent Curriculum, Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation (National Specialized Major), and National Teaching Team.

The Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing Technology of the Ministry of Education is well-equipped with advanced, sophisticated, and large equipment and instruments, which are all in good condition and available for sharing. Six research institutes have been established, including:

Internet + Collaborated Manufacturing Research Institute

Manufacturing Information System Research Institute

Special Equipment Research Institute, Surface Engineering Research Institute

Friction Materials Research Institute

Mountain Agricultural Machinery Research Institute

Three Engineering Centers have also been established, including:

Guizhou Provincial CAD Engineering Technology Center

The Key Components Anti-fatigue Manufacturing Technology Engineering Research Center of Guizhou Province

Guiyang Manufacturing Information Technology Research Center.

Other facilities include: one center for productivity promotion (Guizhou Provincial Manufacturing Informatization Productivity Promotion Center), one management office, and one training base (Guizhou Provincial Manufacturing Informatization Training Base). The Laboratory covers an area of over 8,300 m², with more than 178 sets of equipment, each worth over 10,000 RMB, for a total of over 29 million RMB. In addition, the extended area of the Laboratory covers an area of nearly 10,000 m² at the new campus of Guizhou University in Huaxi, Guiyang.

The Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing Technology of the Ministry of Education is chaired by Professor Xie Qingsheng. The director of the Academic Committee is academician Sun Jiaguang, the leading scientist in advanced manufacturing and automation in the 'National 863 Initiative.' In recent years, the Key Laboratory of Modern Manufacturing Technology of the Ministry of Education has undertaken 196 scientific research projects, among which there are: five 'National 863 Initiative' Projects (including one key project), over 10 National Science and Technology Support Programs, and over 60 major research grants from the National Natural Science Fund, over 10 International Cooperation Projects affiliated with the Ministry of Science and Technology and five projects affiliated with the Ministry of Education, including over 100 national and ministerial projects. The project funding totals 185 million RMB. Furthermore, more than 600 papers were published (more than 200 articles in SCI/EI/ISTP). Additionally, the Laboratory has been awarded for over 20 scientific and technological achievements; over 100 national patents (including more than 20 for invention patents) have been obtained; it has also received over 10 Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. As a number of accredited technologies have been transferred for commercial exploitation, the additional industrial output reaches 450 million RMB, contributing significantly to the social development and economic growth.

Learning from experiences gathered from other key laboratories, in line with the operational principle highlighting 'openness, mobility, interconnectivity, and competition,' the Laboratory has given top priority to the needs in Guizhou's manufacturing industry as well as the needs of national and regional development. It has set its sight on international frontiers and thus able to focus on four major research areas: advanced manufacturing mode and manufacturing information system, anti-fatigue design and manufacturing, surface engineering technology, and special equipment development. Relying on the platform featuring production, teaching, and research, the Laboratory has built an expert team, which tackles the most difficult issues and provides expertise and support. Building on these merits and improvements, the Laboratory will forge ahead to provide crucial technical support and efficient application services, helping the manufacturing enterprises in China and Guizhou explore the new path towards industrialization. With the mission of making a difference in regional and social development, the Laboratory will make sustained efforts to play an influential role and become a key training facility for talents, scientific research and academic exchanges in the modern manufacturing.
